St Mary's Garden & Vineyard
About the garden
365 V & A Lane, Penola 5277
Today St Mary’s is the garden of Glenys and Barry Mulligan and family.
The property was purchased in 1937 with the homestead and other building constructed over the next decade.
The garden at that time consisted of the front lawn and rear courtyard. but in the 1960s the garden was extended and poplars, candle pines were planted.
The Mulligans started planting roses in the 1970s and now have more than 500.
Sandstone rock from St Mary’s quarry is used for dry stone walling, pathways, structures and artworks.
The Kitchen Garden which provides seasonal vegetables and fruit is worked using permaculture principles. The shade house is used for plants and trees for the garden and surrounds.
Many sections of the garden have been redesigned to incorporate sun loving plants and bulbs suitable for our Mediterranean climate.
The garden is open to the public ($6 entry) with bus tours, lunches and afternoon teas available to be prebooked.
