Kinclaven is an historic two-acre garden surrounding a gracious old home that dates from the 1880s. The sloping site has been terraced, and the garden is a blend of different styles, varying from Italianate to English and Mediterranean to sub-tropical. The entrance court is spectacular – a fountain in an elegant, oval-shaped pond planted with water lilies and aquatic plants, and edged with clipped greenery, dramatically shoots a single spire of water high into the air. Small statues of cherubs positioned around the pond and other statuary add to the classical ambience. Magnificent mature trees, some as old as the house, create shelter and microclimates ideal for the eclectic collection of plants that have originated from all over the world. Camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas, and cold-climate plants blend harmoniously with lush subtropical species, contrasting with the strappy or sculptural shapes of Mediterranean plants and succulents.
